Frequently Asked Questions

Q. Who can help me plan my move?

A. Your relocation consultant will assist you with planning the details of your move. We will provide you with a comprehensive pre-move orientation about each step of the moving process, we will analyze your individual requirements and answer all of your questions. Be sure to show the moving consultant everything that is to be moved including items in storage sheds, attics etc. If you have items stored at another location, it is best that you make a detailed list and update your relocation consultant about it.

Q. How long does a pre-move estimate take?

A. In most cases a pre-move estimate takes no longer than an hour. But of course this all depends on the complexity of the move.

Q. What are my responsibilities?
A. In brief ...

  • Be present during the packing of your belongings.
  • Take personal responsibility for jewelry and other high value items.
  • Check and sign the inventory of your belongings.
  • Ensure that no prohibited items are packed.

Q. How Long Does It Take To Move?

A. This depends on the time of the month, weather conditions, size of your shipment, time required to load and unload, and the direction and distance your
shipment is traveling. Nationwide Van Lines will provide you with estimated service and transit times upon request.

Q. How long will it take to pack my goods?
A. Every case is individual but in average we can pack a home in 1-2 days

Q. Am I Protected Against Loss Or Damage While My Property Are In Transit?

A. Yes, but how much protection you have and its cost to you depend upon the insurance option you choose. Insurance options will be addressed in writing in our
written estimate for proposed services.

Q. Should I be present during the loading of my furniture?

A. Yes, you should definitely oversee the loading of your furniture and should not leave during the loading process. Examine the mover's description of your furniture on
the inventory and initial for any chipped or marred items. Do an inventory of your goods against the mover's list and make certain that all the furniture and boxes that
you are taking are on the list.

Q. Will My Furnishings Remain Clean?

A. Nationwide Van Lines has well trained professionals who are highly knowledgeable in the moving field. We also protect your possessions with top quality materials to assure you that your shipment will arrive in the same condition as they were picked up.

Q. Are there any items that cannot be moved?

A. Yes, there are several items that cannot be moved in our vans for safety reasons. Items such as: Aerosols, Flammables, Cleaning Agents, Combustibles, Perishables, Plants, Ammunition, Paints, Cars, Animals, Motorcycles, Propane Tanks.

There are also many items which cannot be moved for the customer's protection. These are items you should plan to take with you because they cannot be claimed
as lost or damaged. They fall in the following categories: Jewelry, Coin or Stamp Collections, Stock Certificates, Rare Items, Currency, Important Documents.

Your relocation consultant can provide you with a more comprehensive list.

Always remember to take with you items you will need such as airline tickets, papers for school enrollment, home closings etc. We suggest you set aside a special carton for these items and mark it "Do Not Load".

Q. What if my shipment is going into storage?

A. Than you should keep the following in mind:

  • If possible do not put items in storage that you may need to access. Your goods will be stored in palletized storage vaults in a Nationwide Van Lines agent's warehouse. Your goods will not be readily accessible to you. If you do need to access your storage vaults, then you will be charged a fee for warehouse labor. If you do your own packing, please remember that all storage items must be packed in a carton. Empty all contests of dressers, chests and drawers before your move into storage.
  • Make sure that items that are to be delivered to your temporary residence are clearly marked and are segregated from those that are going into storage.
  • If you move a car you must pick it up when your household goods are delivered to storage (unless other arrangements have been made). Please note that mover's are not permitted to store automobiles inside their warehouses (for safety reasons) so, if you require auto storage, discuss it with your moving consultant in advance of your move. Commercial garages are available in most major centers to accommodate this need. Do not pack items in your car that we are shipping.

Q. Do movers disassemble beds or any other furniture's?

A. Yes, the movers will disassemble beds and bed frames with the exception of waterbeds (these require special servicing). They will also disassemble any other items that need to be taken apart for safe transportation. The mover will reassemble these items at destination. Items you disassemble at origin will be your responsibility to reassemble at destination. Movers/packers will not remove items that are affixed to walls or ceilings (i.e. drapery tracks) due to the possibility of property damage.

Q. Will there be any "unexpected" charges?

A. Generally, unexpected costs result from a breakdown in communication between the customer and the moving company. Do not be in a rush when you are booking your move. Taking the time up front to talk to your sales person will make both parties better aware of the situation they will encounter on moving day. For example, have you remodeled your house since you moved in? If so, some of the furniture that went in originally may not come out the same way. Have you purchased any furniture that had to be assembled in your home? And of course, if something was craned or hoisted into your home when you moved in, be certain to mention that as well.

Q. What happens if it rains/ snows / or the weather is bad?

A. We at Nationwide Van Lines will always honor our moving commitments regardless of weather. Unpredictable weather might slow down the job but we all know that weather is unavoidable. If your move occurs on a day where the weather is acting up we will try our best to take precautions to protect floors and carpeting from excess dirt and soil.

Q. Can I leave clothes and other items inside the furniture during the move?

A. Nationwide Van Lines recommends that all clothes and items be removed from inside the furniture. This includes all desks, dressers, armoires...etc.  This makes the furniture much lighter and easier to move.  This in turn limits the wear and tear to your furniture during the move.  Generally the only items of furniture that can be safely moved with items still in them are small light pieces of furniture containing very light belongings inside.

Q. What if parking is a problem in the place I am moving to/from?

A. If parking a large truck will be tight or complicated at either your old or new location, or if it appears that it will be necessary for us to double park in front of your house or building, you should advise us of this before moving day. You can help prevent any problems by parking your own cars and placing barrels, cones etc. in the necessary spaces-a day to two prior of the move. You should allow for about 40-50 feet, keeping in mind that the walk ramps add on to the total length of our trucks.

Make sure you inform you relocation consultant of any parking issues. This may affect your moving price.

Q. What if my move requires elevator access?

A. In most cases this won't be a problem. Some buildings management's require you to reserve the elevator in advance, and many buildings do not permit you to move on weekends or use there primary tenant elevators. Make sure you have made all necessary reservations before you schedule your move. Please advise us as to the schedule you have reserved for your elevator.

Q. What if I need an "Emergency move"?

A. Nationwide Van Lines understands that such factors as a lease expiration, a real estate closing or a business relocation are crucial to the timing of your move. We ask
you to advise us about this move as soon as possible as there may be alternatives that can be addressed to meet your time requirements.

Q. Can My Possessions Be Stored Temporarily?

A. Yes, this normally happens when you have not been able to take possession of your new home. Nationwide Van Lines will store your belongings in the warehouse until your home becomes available. Additional charges may apply. Speak to your relocation consultant for more information.

Q. Am I Required To Tip?

A. Like all services tipping is not required. A tip is a reward for a job well done. If your movers did a good job, a tip is very much appreciated.
